Picturesque, dramatic, romantic
Dominated by the dramatic ruins of its 12th century castle, Warkworth rests within a winding loop of the river Coquet only a short distance from where it spills into the North Sea. Spanning the river is a narrow mediaeval fortified stone bridge, one of a handful remaining in the country. The market place and main street are lined with picturesque Georgian and early Victorian houses.
Three of the scenes from Shakespeare's Henry IV are set at the castle. It was here the 3rd Earl Percy and his son Harry Hotspur plotted to set Henry IV on the throne. The Church of St. Lawrence, an almost complete Norman building, was the scene of a massacre in 1174 when the Scots, under Earl Duncan, murdered men, women and children who had taken up refuge there. A short distance up the river is the Hermitage. Reached by rowing boat, this tiny 14th century chapel and a sacristy are built into the cliff face, while the hermit's house was built outside.
For those on holiday, Warkworth is an ideal base from which to tour Northumberland, Durham or the Scottish Borders. Only a few minutes drive and you encounter dramatic unspoilt coastline with majestic castles and offshore islands with an abundance of National Parks, English Heritage and National Trust properties to explore. Golf, river and sea fishing, bird life, sailing and water sports are also widely available in the area.
Less than 2 hours to Edinburgh and a half-hour to Newcastle by road, Warkworth is also ideal for the business person. It is within easy reach of all the main industrial and service locations of Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, and the Scottish Borders.
