Places of Interest:
Warkworth Castle
Warkworth Castle, right on the doorstep of the Sun Hotel,
is a magnificent 12th century stone motte and bailey fortress. The
castle grounds are dominated by an 8 tower keep, which is in remarkable
condition and can be toured. The large and impressive bailey is
enclosed by a ruinous curtain wall, which is flanked by 13th century
square and semi-octagonal towers and an attractive twin-towered
gatehouse. Inside are the complex remains of a range of buildings,
with the tall Lion Tower and Little Stair Tower giving access to
the Great Hall.
Alnwick Castle
A magnificent border fortress dating back to the 11th Century, Alnwick
Castle is the ancestral home of the Duke of Northumberland, the
Percy family, the largest landowners in Northumberland. Historically,
the castle's purpose was to act as one of many of the defences against
Scottish raids on the County. Nowadays, the castle is more of a
stately home and boasts one of the greatest privately owned art
collections in Britain. Below the ramparts of the castle stands
the Lion Bridge - complete with the Percy emblem - a lion with a
straight tail. More recently the Castle and grounds have become
synonymous with the Harry Potter phenomenon, with the massively
successful films partly filmed on location at the Castle.
Alnwick Gardens
Situated adjacent to the Castle grounds, the impressive Alnwick
Water Gardens comprise stunning water features as well as a Rose
Garden and a Topiary Walk.
Cragside House & Gardens, Rothbury
Cragside was built on the hillside directly above the quaint and
beautiful Northumbrian town of Rothbury, by the 1st Lord Armstrong.
The house was surprisingly ahead of its time during the latter part
of the 19th Century - with both hot and cold running water, central
heating, fire alarms, telephones, a Turkish bath suite and a passenger
lift, but most remarkable of all it was the first house in the world
to be lit by hydroelectricity. However it is the grounds and gardens
of Cragside - one of Europe’s largest rock gardens - that
make it so famous.
Bamburgh
The idylic country village of Bamburgh, previous seat of
the kingdom of Northumbria, is set in one of the most breathtakingly
picturesque coastal regions the country has to offer. Its enormous
beaches go on for miles and the area has featured in many epic films.
With trips to the Farne Islands so close at hand from nearby Seahouses,
Bamburgh is an essential place to visit.
Bamburgh Castle
Bamburgh Castle is probably the finest castle in England. It is
perched on a basalt outcrop on the very edge of the North Sea at
Bamburgh, Northumberland. It commands stunning views of the Farne
Islands, Holy Island and land'ward to the Cheviot hills.
Druridge Bay Country Park
The Country Park is approximately 2 miles away on the coast and
features a lake, visitor centre, sand dunes and a 3 mile long sandy
beach. The park also comprises woods and meadows, water sports,
picnic areas, natural history and bird-watching.
Berwick upon Tweed
The border town of Berwick upon Tweed boasts the best preserved
Elizabethan ramparts in the whole of Europe.
Holy Island (Lindisfarne)
A tidal island with its own Castle and Priory, possessing superb
views of Bamburgh and the Farne Islands.
Craster
With its famous smoke houses and the 'Craster Kippers'. Craster
is approximately 8 miles away from Warkworth.
Amble Marina
Approximately 1 mile away, the marina offers puffin cruises to Coquet
Island around an RSPB Bird Reserve.
Farne Islands
Boat trips are available from nearby Seahouses harbour to the islands,
which comprise bird and seal colonies plus a marine life centre.
